She is her own Walkman, her own big band and her own soundscape. Every
instrument she needs for her performance she pulls, as it were,
spontaneously out of her pocket.
Vocal acrobatics, free improvisation, a touch of audience interaction
and, every now and then, a good old-fashioned melody – this voice won’t
get boring any time soon, even without a microphone or loop station.
Eastern European folk music meets jazz. Jazz meets strophic songs. The
strophic songs encounter the Orient, and at the end everyone says: “We
really must do something together!”
And so they do, in the most creative way. The Kozmic Trio stops at no
border or language barrier and, along the way, opens up a few entirely
new ways of understanding music.
All three musicians are at home in jazz, while always keeping the door
open to much else the world has to offer musically. Imke Johanne
Spöring, a seasoned globetrotter, brings her lively soprano voice, her
compositions and her natural way with foreign languages and cultures to
the project. To the Kozmic Trio’s grand experiment, Jaime Moraga adds a
good dash of rhythmic pepper – yet with such sensitivity that one can
only call it “melodic”. At the piano, Matthias Dymke explores sonic
extremes as he skilfully weaves all these influences together.
The common thread of this challenging project is surely the wish to make
simply moving, authentic music. – For that is the essence that makes
borders unnecessary.
When Aline Sardão and Imke Johanne Spöring, alias “Farofa”, get going,
it’s like listening in on a spirited conversation. The many journeys
both musicians have made in their lives alone provide plenty of material
for a thrilling musical exchange. Time and again, though, they meet in
one particular place of longing: Brazil. With an explorer’s curiosity
the two delve into the country’s great musical variety, carry the
audience off to exotic beaches with sambas and bossa novas, and give
Brazilian pop songs a wonderful new jazz note. “Farofa” bring plenty of
Brazilian lightness to the stage, as well as the famous “saudade”
(longing/melancholy). To top it all, they also venture into quite
different corners of the South American continent. Versatility is their
theme; besides guitar and voice, the two conjure up quite a few other
instruments – so that this minimalist duo is almost bursting with
rhythm, a wealth of sounds and – sheer joy in storytelling.
